Born in Jarrow on the river Tyne in 1950, John studied Landscape Architecture at Leeds Polytechnic graduating in 1976.

After several years dabbling in various mediums without success, he made a concentrated effort in 1982 to improve his watercolour technique.

His style developed and improved rapidly resulting in his first exhibition at Leeds Playhouse in 1983, he  had enough confidence by 1985 to resign from his regular job and plunge into painting full time.

The inspiration for his paintings comes firstly from his favourite medium of watercolours, followed by his love of the mountains having been a keen active climber since being bitten by the bug in his teens.

Over the past ten years John has had several one-man exhibitions and has been involved in many group art displays, with his paintings on view in many private galleries throughout Cumbria where he now lives.

In 1995 he opened the Mountain Painters Gallery in Patterdale at the south end of Ullswater where he can be reached on  Tel: 01768-821-031 or visit his Web Site at
